A Raccoon River Conference matchup between two of the top five teams lived up to the narrative of a close hard fought contest.
The Perry Jayettes (13-6,7-5) basketball team pulled off a late fourth quarter surge and held on to beat the conference leading Boone Toreadors (16-4, 11-2) in a nail biting 40-39 game.
At home last night the two teams continuously exchanged baskets and defensive plays, which kept the game close all night.
Johanna Diw, Jayette junior, led the team in points with 15 and rebounds with eight and has two assists. She finished 6-for-8 from the floor including 1-for-3 from three and 2-for-2 from the stripe.
The Jayettes opened up the first with an 11-point run while their defense held the Toreadors to just nine.
It was a seesaw battle in the second quarter with what could’ve been interpreted as anything you can do the other could do better. Both teams finished the second with eight points.
After the half, the Jayettes defense had trouble stopping the Toreadors from not only erasing their deficit but taking a four point lead into a the third after a 15-9 quarter.
In the final quarter the game continued close. The home team stepped up their defense while the offense mounted a late comeback run, 12-4, that sealed the Jayettes’ victory.
All five starters contributed in the win. Emma Olejniczak and Grace Marburger, seniors, combined for 17 points - Olejniczak nine and Marburger eight. Grace Stewart added six points and Molly Lutmer, freshman, scored two. Stewart also led the team in assists with four.
As a unit the starters finished 9-of-18, 5-of-20 from three, and 7-of-9 from the line. They pulled down 15 rebounds - nine defensive, six offensive, with 10 assists, three steals and a block.
The Jayettes avenged their 51-48 Jan. 10 loss and in the process gave snapped the Toreadors four game winning streak.
