Dear Editor,

Perry High School once again put their best foot forward as they hosted the 33rd annual Perry Band Olympics, Saturday, Feb. 18. Hundreds of the finest instrumentalists from 12 central Iowa schools, including Ankeny Centennial, Dowling Catholic, Valley of West Des Moines, Ankeny High, Urbandale, Waukee, Don Bosco of Gilbertville, West Marshall, Des Moines North, Webster City, Ballard of Huxley, and host, Perry.

Students performed in 17 contest sites for expert university and high school adjuticators. Director, Brandon Weeks, and a bevy of Perry students organized and administered the contest centers in superb fashion as they have done for former director, Steve Cook, in the past.

It is my pleasure to commend the Perry High School administration for recognizing the value and correlation between band and academics. The “Super Bowl of Solo and Ensemble contests” has become one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Iowa, has been copied in surrounding states, and is a “plus” for Perry and those who reside in the same.

Director Weeks and the Perry kids deserve both gratitude and thanks they earned a “gold star” for giving the visitors a taste of Perry Hospitality at its finest.

Jerry Kinney, former Perry band director
