Services for Robert James Wheelwright, 65, of Perry, were Saturday, July 6, at the First Christian Church in Perry. Robert passed away July 3, 2013, at the Bright Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Pastor Tim Johnson officiated the services, with Judith Henry as the pianist. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Robert was born September 15, 1947, the son of Max and Jean (Friar) Wheelwright in Perry. After graduating from Perry High School he graduated from the University of Iowa and then George Washington University where he received his law degree.
He was a member of the First Christian Church. His passions were his family, music, sports, playing the piano and organ at his church, along with singing in his church choir. Bob enjoyed traveling to visit his children and grandchildren in Texas and Colorado. He enjoyed attending numerous events at the Des Moines Civic Center and was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye Fan. Bob was a devoted son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a friend to many. Robert is survived by his father Max Wheelwright of Des Moines; son David (Sunni) Wheelwright of Colleyville, Texas; daughter Jenny (Ryan) Kern of Parker, Colo.; sisters: Barbara Kelly of San Francisco, Calif., Betsy (William) Daniel of Tucson, Ariz., Anne (Doug) McVinua of Phoenix, Ariz.; one uncle Robert Friar of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren Madison, Grant Wheelwright, and Dawson and Aspen Kern; and several nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Ann Wheelwright in 1997; grandparents, Robert and Birdeena Wheelwright and Irene Friar. Memorials are suggested to the Perry High School Music Department and HCI Care Services and may be left at Murdock Funeral Home, which was in charge of services.
