Dorothy (Rice) Groves, 95, passed away on May 8, 2018 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa.

Dorothy, the daughter of Harve and Mary (Patterson) Rice, was born in Washington Township, Greene County, Iowa on April 15, 1923. She was the youngest of seven children and graduated from the Rippey Consolidated School. She married LaVerne Groves on December 27, 1941. They had three children: Judy, Louise, and Floyd.

Cooking, baking, and playing cards were some of her favorite activities. Her pies, homemade noodles, and casserole were always crowd pleasers. Throughout her life she helped run the family farm as well as working outside of the home at Montgomery Ward in Perry and Des Moines, the Co-op Appliance Store, and Brobst Cafe in Rippey.

She lived on the farm south of Rippey for 30 years before she and LaVerne bought a home in Rippey. Shortly after LaVerne’s passing on December 4, 1993, Dorothy moved to the Senior Citizen’s Apartments in Rippey where she lived for her remaining 23 years.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters Judy (Ray) Busch of Ogden, Iowa and Louise Cook of Waukee, Iowa; son Floyd (Joani) Groves of Rippey, Iowa; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Harve and Mary (Patterson) Rice; her brothers Floyd Rice, Myron Rice, and Guy Rice; and her sisters Irene Fister, Marvel Todd, and Vera Osweiler.

Memorial contributions will be donated to Grand Junction Fire and Rescue. Funeral services were held at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home, Jefferson, with burial at the Rippey Cemetery.
