Gladys (Stava) Read, daughter of Katie (Hurt) Stava and Albert Stava, was born in Bee, Neb., Jan. 27 1931, and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on her 87th birthday.
Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. A funeral service was at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church in Perry with Rev, Lynne Hanna officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Marshall Menz, Mikelle Read, Danyel Read and Victor Malchesky. Casket bearers were Donovan Nissen, Andy Stava, Chad Menz, Lynn Naber, Ryon Richardson, Dylan Nissen, and Terry Randell. Musicians were Dave Menz, Gary Weishaar, and Elta Summerson. Burial followed at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
Gladys attended Teachers College High School and Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, Neb. Gladys married Clifford “Cliff” Read in Lincoln Neb., Feb. 18 1950. They moved to Perry, Iowa in 1958. They had three children, Keith, David and Karen.
Gladys was a member of the Perry First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon. She enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, games, and holiday family gatherings. She was a proud resident and advocate for the town of Perry for over 60 years; and made the Perry Lutheran Home her residence for the last 18 months. Gladys greatly loved her family and was a friend to everyone she met.
Gladys is survived by her son Keith Read and his wife Sue of Olathe, Kan. and their daughters Danyel of Chicago and Mikelle, also of Olathe. She is also survived by Teresa (Wempe, Read) Malchesky her husband Victor of Colorado Springs, nieces that were raised and thought of as daughters, Jeri Naber, and Janel Menz. Also survived by great nephew Chad Menz and his daughter, great nieces Lynnelle Nissen, Laura Schluckebier and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Albert and Ermin and one sister Nora Divis. She was also preceded in death by her husband Cliff, two children, David and Karen.
