Michael Schlueter of Waukee, a volunteer at the Dallas County Conservation Board (DCCB), shows local Cub Scouts and other interested visitors the special techniques used to pan for gold in Iowa rivers. Schlueter was among several specialists and enthusiasts at the Voas Nature Area’s rock and mineral event on Saturday. Northwest Missouri State University Geology Professor John Pope was on hand to identify rock and mineral specimens brought in by visitors. Pope, a Winterset native, and Storm Lake’s Robert Wolf, author of "Fossils of Iowa," gave lectures on Iowa geology. The DCCB’s Historical and Cultural Resources Coordinator Pete Malmberg directed the event, and Cindy Blobaum, DCCB naturalist, provided a salamander petting zoo. Chief Naturalist Ray harden and Margaret Harden also attended and enriched the conversation.
