Two local veterans now have their military medals. The medals were handed out by Sen. Joni Ernst during a ceremony on Friday, Aug. 10 at the main campus of Perry Lutheran Homes.

“Today our focus is really on two very special veterans,” Sen. Ernst said.

Vietnam War veteran Hilario Dominguez, of Perry Lutheran Homes, and World War II veteran Paul Scott, of Panora, were presented with medals they earned while in service. Both received their medals for the first time during the Aug. 10 ceremony.

“These medals are given to you not by my office, but they are given to you by the United States of America on behalf of an extremely grateful nation,” Sen. Ernst said.

Dominguez served in the United States Army from 1967-1969. He served as a cook and in the construction field.

Sen. Ernst presented Dominguez with a number of medals. They included the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar.

“I want to thank you for your service. Thank you for serving,” Sen. Ernst said after presenting the medals to Dominguez.

“We thank you so much. We are very proud of your service,” Sen. Ernst said to Scott.

After the ceremony, Sen. Ernst posed for photos with members of both families.

Scott was joined by wife Waneta Scott and daughter Laura Kemble.

Dominguez was joined three generations, including daughter Vivian Dominguez, her five sons and their families. “I want to thank Sen. Ernst for coming out and doing this for my father. This is a great honor to have her here with us and all of you to be present for my father,” Vivian Dominguez said during the ceremony.

Sen. Ernst reiterated that the medals given to Dominguez and Scott were on behalf of a grateful nation.

“We appreciate both of you so very much. Thank you for all that you have given for all of us,” Sen. Ernst said.
