A group of senior girls posed for a photo with signs and banners from Iowa State University, Wartburg College, Briar Cliff University and more on Friday, May 4.

Another group threw bean bags at a target while wearing T-shirts bearing logos from ISU, University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa.

The festivities were part of the second annual College Decision Day on May 4 at the Perry High School. Representatives from 12 different colleges, universities and service branches made the trip to Perry to have the seniors sign certificates saying they will attend school in the fall.

Perry High School was one of around 30 schools in Iowa to host a College Decision Day. Counselor Anne Horgen said the day is part of an initiative by Iowa College Aid.

“It recognizes students going on to post-secondary schools,” she said.

Admission counselors and other representatives introduced each college, university or service branch. The seniors who will be attending school in the fall were then invited to sign a certificate on a stage in the high school gym.

Photos were taken as freshmen, sophomore and junior students watched from the back during their lunch hours.

“It sets an example for the 9-11 grade students,” Principal Dan Marburger said.

It sets an example, he said, for those students to realize they can attend a two-year or a four-year college or university. Students can also choose to go into the military.

Marburger said the high school wants to make students aware of all of the options available after high school. And they also wanted to celebrate the current seniors as they prepare to move on from Perry to college.

“It’s a big accomplishment for any kid,” Marburger said.

The College Decision Day was a way to add some excitement to the students deciding where to attend college. Hy-Vee provided grilled hamburgers for the seniors. Music played in the gym between the signings as students took pictures with college banners while wearing college gear.

“There’s a lot of smiles and a lot of good moods today,” Marburger said.

Nowhere was that more evident than the group of senior girls bound for ISU, UNI, Briar Cliff, Wartburg and more. They took multiple turns at the photo booth holding signs and banners for their respective colleges.

“I like it. It shows where everyone is going,” Katelyn Thomason said of the College Decision Day. “It gives recognition to people continuing on to college.”

She was posing for photos with Gaby Chavez and Breanna Ackerman. Chavez said she is planning to attend Briar Cliff to cheer and dance. Ackerman will be heading to ISU.

“My family has always been ISU fans. I really liked the campus and the atmosphere there,” Ackerman said of why she decided on the university.

The group quickly grabbed more props and posed for another photo in front of the College Decision Day banner.

“It’s something special,” Ackerman said of the day.
