Luke Holtorf, the son of Rhea Wright, has been selected to represent American Legion Post 85 of Perry at the 2018 session of American Legion Hawkeye Boys State, set for June 10-15. Holtorf is currently a junior attending Perry High School.


His course of study includes, but is not limited to, British literature, Chemistry, Advanced Placement US history, Probability Studies, International Law and Human Resource aspects of Business Management.


Keeping physically fit, Holtorf is involved in weightlifting, football, wrestling and track. Other extracurricular involvement includes Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Perry Students Activities Council.


This year, as always, American Legion Hawkeye Boys State will be held on the grounds of Camp Dodge, just north of Johnston. This is the 79th annual meeting of American Legion Hawkeye Boys State. During the week, the boys will experience presentations involving different aspects of local, county and state government. Boys will experience campaigning and running for various positions in government. In short, the boys will experience democracy in action.


Selection of candidates for Boys State is a joint process involving members of American Legion Post 85 and the Perry Activities Department of Perry High School. Funding for the annual attendance of candidates is made possible by American Legion Post 85 and various donations made to the post during the year.
