Perry Floral and Gifts is temporarily closed because of smoke damage from a fire on Wednesday, March 21, a statement from the business said.

The fire originated in the concrete block addition in the rear of the building owned by Bacon Jewelers. Smoke was reported in the early morning hours on March 21 coming from the roof of Perry Floral. While the fire was contained, it caused significant smoke damage to the jewelry store, Perry Floral and Gifts, located in the same building owned by Bacon Jewelers, and Ben’s Five and Dime.

Bacon Jewelers is closed for the foreseeable future as insurance adjusters work in the building this week, Eddie Bacon said. All of the inventory inside Ben’s Five and Dime will be removed from the store, a statement read.

Perry Floral and Gifts owner Trish Roberts said in a statement that while the store is temporarily closed, “she is working as hard and quickly as she can to get Perry Floral up and operational at 100 percent again.”

The full statement is below:

Trish Roberts from Perry Floral and Gifts would like to thank the Perry Volunteer Fire Department as well as everyone who has called, stopped her on the street and otherwise reached out to show their support after last week’s fire.

“All the well wishes from our customers, the chalk art from the kids at St. Pats and the food that people brought us are very much appreciated. Those gestures are things that truly show what small towns are all about and what a great community Perry is!” Roberts said.

There appears to be little structural damage from the fire, but the smoke damage was quite extensive.

“The recovery process will take time. Being just a few days away from having our remodel completed and bringing that old storefront back to life makes it even more difficult,” Roberts said.

Roberts said that Perry Floral will be temporarily closed as they move through the process with the insurance companies involved.

There has been speculation and many theories about the cause of the fire, at this time however, there has been no determination as to what caused the fire.
