The Woodward-Granger Hawks boys’ basketball team (1-0) began their season with a close 81-75 victory on the road versus the Blue Devils of Martensdale-St Marys (0-1).

Three of the Hawks’ starters accounted for 50 percent of the scoring with Keith Braunschweig leading the way with 18 points after an 8-for-14 performance including 2-for-2 from three.

At Martensdale-St. Marys on Nov. 24, the Hawks and Blue Devils opened up the first quarter with both teams answering each others call in a 17 all match.

It all changed in the second for the Hawks whose defense held up and allowed just 15 points while the offense scored 24.

W-G’s junior Noah Hoyt and sophomore Bryce Achenbach along with sophomore Kaya Bowlsby helped sparked the offensive output.

Hoyt finished with 16 points on 66 percent shooting, Achenbach scored 11 points and led the team in assists with nine.

Off the bench Bowlsby added 15 points after shooting 4-for-7 from the floor including finishing a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.

In the second half the Hawks struggled to keep pace with their host as they were outscored 17-15 in the third.

The final eight minutes saw the Blue Devils attempt to close the gap with 26 points but the road team kept up with 25 points for the six point win.

Offensively the Hawks went 25-for-57 from the floor, 5-for-8 from three with 29 boards - 16 defensive and 13 offensive, 15 assists, 18 steals (Achenbach - 10) and a block shot.
