The 2017 Build a Better World Summer Reading Program had a record year, according to Library Director Mary Murphy. This year’s program included participation from 120 adults, 71 teens, and 503 children.

“We had the KidsFest to kick it off and so that did help the registration,” Murphy said. “Our overall numbers - it was a record setting year.”

The June 3 event was free to the public, but resides as the most costly and largest program for the Perry Public Library. This year, the Perry Public Library received funds from generous business and donors, as well as a grant from the Bock Family Foundation.

“We were very fortunate in that the Kids Fest was funded by a Bock grant and major employers of the area,” Murphy said. “So that event was all paid for by the community and a Bock grant.”

“Whether its in-kind or money - they really come through for us,” Murphy said. “It is our biggest program in numbers and our biggest program in what we spend.”

This year’s Kids Fest acted as a kick-off for the summer reading program, “Build a Better World.” The program welcomed in readers during the second week of May, on May 15.

The program aids to the educational gap that falls during the summertime, allowing participants to earn prizes through their reading accomplishments and attend age-specific events on the theme throughout the summer. At the end of the summer, those involved in the program get the opportunity to be entered into a drawing based on the three programs and win a prize.

“We read books, earned incentive prizes, and attended some fantastic programs and events throughout June and July, following the KidsFest kick-off,” the August and September Library newsletter read.

“The Friends of the Perry Public Library and the Kiwanis are major contributors to the Summer Reading Program,” Murphy said. Murphy also reached out to Kum & Go who gave a gift card.

The overall generosity from the community, as well as participants from the program allowed the summer event to be a success.
