CLIVE — A spontaneous decision to buy a lottery ticket paid off recently for a Guthrie County man.

Nathaniel “Nate” Nelson of Jamaica bought a scratch ticket Sunday in “The BIG Ticket” game at Kum & Go, 1115 Iowa Highway 141 in Perry and ended up winning the 23rd of 35 prizes of $10,000 available in the game.

Nelson, 31, said he was still inside the store when he scratched off his ticket and found out that he’d won.

“I had to question it,” Nelson told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s headquarters in Clive. “I questioned it like three times and I actually had to scan it like three times.”

Nelson is originally from South Dakota and is no stranger to winning big lottery prizes. He said he also won $7,000 playing the South Dakota Lottery a few years ago.

He said he plans to use a majority of his most recent winnings to pay bills.

The BIG Ticket is a $20 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery’s website,
