The late Larry and the late Pat Blaker will be honored at the annual Memorial Golf Tournament that will be held on Sunday, July 9th, at the Perry Golf & Country Club. Each year the club honors the memory of a member who made a significant impact on the club and community. Larry and Pat died earlier this spring within days of each other.


Larry Grant Blaker (81) was born July 11, 1935 in Sand Springs IA. His parents were John Grant Blaker and Cora Marie Blaker. Larry had one sister, Bobbette Blaker Fortney, of Cedar Falls. Larry graduated high school in 1954 at Teacher’s College High School in Cedar Falls, IA. He attended Buena Vista University on a football scholarship and finished his Bachelor’s degree at UNI, majoring in Physical Education. Larry went on to Iowa State to receive his Master’s Degree and Specialist Degree in School Administration.


Patricia Ann Blaker (78) was born May 1, 1939 in Ames, IA. Her parents were Walter and Beverly Smith. Pat had one sister, Barbara Binkley, of Ames and one brother, Greg Smith, of Burlington. She graduated high school in 1957 from Ames High school and studied at UNI.


Larry and Pat have three children, Jim (Cindy) Blaker of Colfax, Joe (Julie) Blaker of Woodward and Tom Blaker of Sunnyvale, CA. They have seven grandchildren; Max (Alex) Blaker, Andrew Farley, Arion (Justin) Tooley, Amanda (Ben) Feathers, Elyse Blaker, Samantha Blaker and Andrew Blaker. And they have four great grandchildren: Callie Jo Tooley, Kinsey Tooley, Colt Tooley and Graeme Blaker.


Pat and Larry were married on December 21, 1958 at the Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, IA. Larry’s career started as a football and wrestling coach at Boone High School before he received his Master’s Degree from ISU. After graduation, they moved to Perry in 1970 where he accepted the position of Assistant Principal at Perry High School. He later accepted the High School Principal’s position at Woodward-Granger where he retired in 1995. Pat was a devoted mother to her 3 boys and also worked in the Perry School District as an administrative assistant and secretary.


Larry loved the game of golf and officiating wrestling. He is a past board member of Perry Golf and Country Club, 10 yr board member of the Rowley Masonic Home, an Elks Club member, Optimist Club member, and Masonic Lodge member. He was awarded the Iowa High School Wrestling Association “Official of the Year” in 1994 and was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1996. Larry was also instrumental in developing a junior golf program at the Perry Golf & Country Club and served as an assistant golf coach for several years for Perry High School. Pat loved to read, play bridge with friends, watch birds and spend time with her grandchildren. They both loved Perry Golf & Country Club and were very active members. Larry and Pat were “best friends” for 58 years. God bless them.


The Memorial Tournament is an individual stroke play event with the top 12 and ties playing an additional 9 holes for the championship. All other players will be flighted. Defending champion Nick Luett is entered in this year’s tournament. Any individual who would like to play in this year’s tournament should contact the clubhouse as soon as possible (465-3852).
