Perry High School junior TJ Sheehy will advance to the national SkillsUSA competition in masonry June 19-23 in Louisville, Ky.

The National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) is a showcase of career and technical education students. More than 16,000 people — including students, teachers and business partners — are expected to participate in the weeklong event.

The local Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union 3 have worked with TJ to help her prepare for the national competition and Marshalltown Tools donated masonry tools for her use.

“The Masonry Institute of Iowa has partnered with SKillsUSA to help expose more students to masonry. Our goal is to support the students who go onto the national competition in masonry,” said Jenny Stephenson, association director of the Masonry Institute of Iowa.

TJ is the daughter of Troy Sheehy and Melody Sheehy. She has been a state SkillsUSA officer for the past three years and is the current treasurer.
