Families completing the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading initiative are invited to a celebration ceremony, Sunday, April 9, at 2 p.m., in recognition of their achievement. Caps, gowns, certificates, and a bag with books for the graduates will mark this special occasion for the participants, families, and friends. A reception will follow. The library plans to make this an annual event!
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is one of the library’s early literacy program. Exposing children to reading and reading materials before kindergarten improves the child’s success in learning and reading readiness.
Other literacy programs initiated by the Perry Public Library in the last year are:
- Journeys into Reading, where parents and child are encouraged to read 15 minutes on five out of seven days
- Book Prizes for Attendance, a program in which the library collaborates with Perry Elementary School to give books to students with perfect attendance
- Afterschool Snacks, where the library provides a nutritious snack to any school-age child at the library, Monday through Friday
- Power READ program, that focuses on Third Grade and pairs reading mentors with students at school. We are partnering with Everyone Wins Iowa! and hope to expand the program to Second Grade in the future
The library also has ongoing programs that focus on early literacy - the Library Storytimes and the Winter and Summer Reading Programs.
The Perry Public Library is committed to providing the best early literacy programs to our community.
