Perry’s Lions Club and Optimist Club are teaming up to take on the third annual Flags Over Perry starting Memorial Day, May 29. The flags are put up by members of both organizations during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Flag Day, and Veterans Day.

For $25 per customer, both organizations will help with the upkeep of flags during the five holidays.

“It’s a fundraiser, but it’s also a volunteer thing for the clubs to do for the community,” Perry Lions Club President, Dave Wright said.

Wright says the money gained is given to both organizations, later given back locally in Perry.

After the $25 contribution, Wright stresses that in order to have the flag properly placed, the organization will contact Iowa One Call for digging purposes.

From there, the organizations will be in charge of putting a flag up in the yard and later taking it down that evening. Wright estimates around 12 to 20 help out with the flag upkeep, all of whom are divided throughout the community.

“Every year it grows little by little,” Wright said.

Flags Over Perry currently has staffed 225 homes and businesses with flags to date.

“Most people are paying for either their home or their business,” Wright said. “We have a few people that have purchased flags in memory of someone.”

Right now, the organizations are in the process of sending out renewals for those who wish to have flags in their yard again. If someone is interested, Wright asks that they schedule it before Memorial Day in order to have enough time for Iowa One Call to set up.

For purchase of the flag, contact members of either the Perry Lions Club or Optimist Club for more information.
